      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>I am originally from Virginia and have lived in the Boone area* for 12 years; these mountains are special and I feel lucky to call them home. I entered the counseling field because I love connecting with other humans, hearing their stories, and helping them feel truly seen and supported while offering new perspectives when they feel stuck. I genuinely feel honored to do this work. I earned my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, along with a Certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy, from Appalachian State University in 2014. I worked as a Staff Counselor at the ASU Counseling Center for over 6 years before transitioning into private practice in Spring 2021. I am a fully Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of North Carolina and a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist. In my free time I love baking, gardening, art-making, connecting with friends and family, the occasional Netflix binge, and hiking with my dog, Margo. <image:title>Counseling FAQs - “What can I expect from the first session?”</image:title>
<image:caption>In our initial session, my focus will be on learning as much as I can about you and your reasons for seeking counseling. I will ask questions while also making plenty of space for you to share what feels most important to you. We will talk about your goals and discuss some possible ways that we may work together to help move you closer to them. We will also take some time to review my policies, your responsibilities as a client, and to address any questions or concerns you may have. The initial session- and perhaps a few sessions beyond that- will also be used to confirm that we are a good fit for one another.</image:caption>

<image:title>Counseling FAQs - “What do subsequent sessions look like?”</image:title>
<image:caption>Moving forward, counseling will be shaped around both what you bring to the sessions- those things that you feel would be most meaningful for us to discuss together- and the goals you set when you started counseling. Depending on your needs, some sessions may feel conversational while others will feel more structured. I aim to help you build insight into the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, and experiences that shape your life, and to support you in identifying what’s working and what may need to change. We’ll explore the internal and external resources you have available to you; often, there are more than you may realize! Counseling is rarely a “quick fix,” and may not always feel easy or comfortable. I believe that some emotional discomfort can often mean really important growth is happening, but you will also never be forced to talk about or do anything you’re not ready to. Ultimately, we will collaborate to create a space that feels safe enough to talk about the hard stuff in life, while also shining plenty of light on what helps you feel positive and hopeful. In addition to traditional “talk therapy,” some clients may find that expressive arts therapy can also be helpful in their counseling work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Counseling FAQs - “How long will it take to feel better?”</image:title>
<image:caption>I cannot make any guarantees about the timing or extent of therapeutic outcomes. That said, I find that clients who are open-minded, willing to do a little “homework” between sessions by applying insights and strategies we discuss, and who attend appointments consistently tend to experience the most benefit from counseling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Please carefully review my Fees and Policies page for information about insurance, fees, policies, and more. <image:title>Counseling FAQs - “How do I get started?”</image:title>
<image:caption>Please take your time exploring my website to learn about me and my services. When you’re ready, contact me via phone or email to schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation, during which I’ll ask a bit about you and your mental health goals, and share some information about myself and my practice. This call is not a counseling session, but rather a chance for us to make sure we’re a good fit for each other. If we are not the right fit or my schedule is full I will make an effort to provide referral information for other providers. Please note that I do not provide Emotional Support Animal assessments/letters.</image:caption>

<image:title>Expressive Arts Therapy - You do not have to be “good at” art in or have formal artistic training in order to engage in expressive arts.</image:title>
<image:caption>Art-making is for everyone. Yes, even you. Even if you’ve been told you’re “not creative” or think you’re “bad at” painting. Even if you haven’t touched so much as a crayon in decades or the thought of writing a poem makes you squirm. All you need is an open mind and willingness to try. Art-making is for everyone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Expressive Arts Therapy - Expressive arts therapy is not about a therapist judging, analyzing, or interpreting your art for you.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s about what your creations mean to you. Sometimes your art’s meaning may be profound and clear as day to you; at other times it may be confusing, may evolve over time, or may seem downright absent. All of that is completely okay, because it’s yours. My job as an expressive arts therapist is to help you approach art-making with openness, curiosity, non-judgment, and perhaps even playfulness. You may just find that you start to bring these qualities into other areas of your life, as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Expressive Arts Therapy - Expressive arts therapy is not about ending up with a product that is “pretty” or “good.”</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s about the process of creating. The thoughts, feelings, and sensations we experience as we engage in art-making can be inherently therapeutic. Whether the end result is something you want to keep forever or something you want to toss in the trash, you can gain a lot by simply paying attention to how it feels to make it and what your art work has to say.</image:caption>
